Sponsor SMD Branch School Monks' Annual Summer Retreat Meals

Greetings from SMD Branch School at Namo Buddha!  Monsoon comes in mid-June and lasts until mid-September bringing daily rains, with dramatic thunder showers, followed by brilliant clear skies and cool breezes. Namo Buddha is quiet and vivid green, blossoms are everywhere and rainbows decorate the sky. Yarne, the monks' traditional summer retreat,  is celebrated every monsoon..

Yarne is a one-and-a-half -month period when the monks take special vows and observe the strictest monastic discipline - not eating afternoon, not leaving the premises (so as spare the lives of insects by not walking around unnecessarily), and not indulging in any entertainment on days off. Dressed in their ceremonial yellow robes, the monks take their meals from the begging bowls and chant elaborate prayers before and after eating. Study and practice go on as usual, and a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere pervades the monastery.

Yarne is considered an important practice for the accumulation of merit, and lay people can take part in this opportunity by making special offerings of tea and food to the sangha. (The monks observing the retreat eat a more substantial lunch than usual, since they won't eat again until the following morning.)

Monetary offerings of any amount made directly to the monks are also welcome. If you're interested in contributing to the summer retreat at Namo Buddha in any of these ways, the cost of these offering are follows:

Lunch US$200 NRs. 15000
Fruit US$47 NRs. 3525
Milk US$34 NRs. 2550
Yogurt US$24 NRs. 1800
Eggs US$ 24 NRs.1800

In a recent talk the monks here, Thrangu Rinpoche emphasized that the newly consecrated monastery at Namo Buddha is an important site for practice. Yarne is an auspicious time in the year for the gathering of merit, not just by Rinpoche's monks but also his lay students who support them.

Thank you, and a happy summer to you!

With warm regards
