Thrangu Tara Abbey
Thrangu Tara Abbey was consecrated on December 9th and 10th, 2008. The Abbey was thronged with people in a celebratory mood. On the last afternoon, the nuns offered a display of their very beautiful Tara dance.
TTA is is Sitapaila, Swyambunath. There are almost 200 nuns in the nunnery. Some of the nuns study in the Central Institute in Varanasi, in India. They are studying the 11 year Acharya Degree programme. Others do retreat and meditation in Manang for 3 years. The other nuns do pujas (services) at the nunnery and work in the day-to-day operation of Thrangu Tara Abbey. The small nuns all come to SMD School as Day students in their bright yellow school bus.
There are four buildings at TTA. The scene is very beautiful with gardens surrounding the Abbey. The nuns are from the northen parts of Nepal, for example, Nubri, Manang, Dzum and Humla. They get everything they need from the nunnery including food, clothing and shelter, and medical and dental care as well as education. The nuns are really compassionate and they know English language so that they are able to translate the Buddha Dharma for foreigners.
