Awards At SMD

Awarded annually, the Thrangu Excellency Award is the top award at SMD School. Nominations are done by students and staff. The award is won by the student who best demonstrates Rinpoche’s aims: preserving the Himalayan culture and language and for commitment to the Buddha’s teachings. In particular, it is given for bodhicitta in action.

These are also annual awards, awarded to two students by the Student Council and teachers. The selection is done on the same basis as the Thrangu Excellency Award.

One student from every class earns this award for making best effort at the end of each term.

In a departure from accepted practice in Nepal, SMD doesn’t force our kids to compete with one another. We do not award or announce “toppers” and scores are kept private. Rather, individual scores are shown to each student, and are explained to the parents (most are illiterate). The students are counseled by the classroom teacher in monthly feedback sessions, so each child can understand strengths and weaknesses.
