The Curriculum

SMD is a Nepali school so we have to follow the curriculum set by the Ministry of Education. Core subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies, Computer, Nepali and Ethics) are enriched by further instruction in Tibetan language as well as the traditional food, dance, music and festivals of the Himalayas. Classes are taught in English. Instruction is given in the teachings of the Buddha. All the children take part in chanting prayers and meditating (Chenrezig) every day.

The young monks and nuns have a more rigorous schedule. They study Dharma texts and learn practices and rituals when they return to their monastic setting at the end of their school day.

Most of the other students are boarders. Ages range from 4 years to 22 years, and classes range from Nursery (Kindergarten) to School Leaving (Class 10). Upon finishing Class 10, students must write national board exams (in Nepali) and if successful, are awarded a School Leaving Certificate (SLC).
