Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding School: Eco Club

As the environment has the common importance for all beings, we human beings should contribute something and take the initiative in preserving it. Students and schools can play a great role in protecting and promoting the environment. School is the place where children learn many things. Thinking this bottom line, SMD Eco Club established at Thrangu Rinpoche's School at 2003 with the slogan, “Keep the school green, clean and peaceful”.

Objectives:

1. To protect and promote the surrounding environment

2. To generate awareness among local people.

3. To preserve and promote the greenery around school.

4. To preserve and promote the social and cultural environment.

5. To generate awareness about the present environmental disorders and to act.

6. To guide students to teach and explain the value and management of environment to their villagers while they are at home during their holidays.

7. To preserve animal and plant life for a proper ecosystem

How Members Join:

In every new academic session, we select one boy and one girl from each class above Class 4 (sometimes we need to vote if there are more candidates). These are the general members of the Eco Club and among the general members we elect the executive body of 11 members having President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and members. There is a separate body for Eco Mangal wall magazine.

What We Do:

1. We do awareness programmes

2. We do keep the surroundings (inside the school and in the Stupa area) clean

3. We do different activities related to environmental issues

4. We volunteer during different school functions

5. We plant things in the school compound

6. We publish a wall magazine Eco Mangal at the school

7. We do Boudha Stupa and Rinpoche's monastery cleaning on different occasions.

8. We do Eco farming at school, using compost that SMD’s Roots and Shoots Club makes.

Now His Holiness the Karmapa is taking action on environmental issues and many Buddhist sangha have started their role in this work, we Eco Club members of Shree Mangal Dvip School are very happy to work together by joining hands. As we are Buddhist, we are highly committed on Eco Buddhism.
