Preamble:
It is the only condition that we set for kids who win scholarships overseas: we will not help unless each kid writes a promise to our founder, Thrangu Rinpoche, promising to come home to Nepal, to help Rinpoche further his aims, either by helping in one of Rinpoche's numerous institutions, or by helping in the village.
We do not ask for a lifetime commitment: we only ask that the kids come home every chance they get (summer holidays, if they can afford it) and that when they finish their education, that they return to volunteer help, for a year to a year and a half.
Tashi Sherpa just started his scholarship at the Red Cross Nordic United World College in Flekke, Norway. This is the letter Tashi sent to our Rinpoche.
Dear Very Venerable Rinpoche la,
This is a simple plain letter, but it comes from my heart to yours as I head to Norway for my further studies.
Looking back at the years spent in the school, I have had so much that it is undoubtedly impossible to pay back what I have received or achieved. But one thing that I can do is to promise and assure you that I will return with the best that I can be and will help whenever and wherever needed.
This school, administration, all teachers, staffs, sponsors & donors, everyone has played a very significant role for me and I owe a big dept to everyone. My personality and my character have been formed by my experiences here in the school. Living in the company of my peers and following your path has helped me enormously to grow as a better human each day. And with this, I hope to benefit others that come across.
Rinpoche La, I can't promise to be the best but I promise to do my best in every field with the best of my abilities. My religion, language and culture will always remain alive within me though I have to adapt with the western society and culture. I will do my best and will never let you and the school down.
Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the love, care and the blessings that you have always upon me.
Thanking you with admiration and sincerity.
Yours in the Dharma
Tashi Tsering Sherpa
