Improving Academic Performance at the School

Our Academic Supervisor Jhabindra (aka Karma Tsering) in Class

Our Dean, Thupten Bhutia, teaching one-to-one

The Academic Supervisor Jhabindra (Karma Tsering) and the Dean, Thupten work as a team to improve teaching standards and academic performance. As Dean, Thupten lives in and knits together the Hostel and the Academic sides of the school. As Academic Supervisor, Jhabindra comes on a daily basis. His responsibility is to supervise instruction at SMD.  The school calendar has been extended and "make-up"days were instituted to cover teaching time lost to "bandhs'…strikes. These adjustments have allowed students (especially Class 10) enough time to finish the syllabus prescribed by the government.

Under the direction of the school director Shirley Blair and with the support of our Principal, Khenpo Chonyi Rangdrol, Thupten and Jhabindra are continuing to implement the policies laid out in the school management plan. This has gone a long way to improving academic standards. One result is that all of our Class 10 students passed the national board exams for the past half dozen years. Lately, they've all been passing in the First Division (cum laude) or With Distinction (magna cum laude). The national pass rate hovers from 18 to 30% ,so this is quite an achievement.

20 SMD students have won scholarships overseas. Our first 4 are in university in the US.
